England manager Sarina Wiegman believes Beth Mead’s next club move could play a major role in determining whether she makes the squad for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, as the forward looks for more consistent starting opportunities.

The 31-year-old is reportedly close to joining Manchester City Women F.C. after confirming she will leave Arsenal W.F.C. this summer when her contract ends, bringing an end to a successful nine-year spell in north London.

Although Mead featured in 21 of Arsenal’s 22 Women’s Super League matches this season, she was named in the starting lineup only 12 times.

Speaking about Mead’s future, Wiegman said regular playing time will be key if the striker wants to remain in contention for England’s World Cup plans.

“She’s still incredibly ambitious and has the quality to perform at the highest level,” Wiegman explained. “At Arsenal, competition for places is intense because of the strength and depth of the squad. She now wants a move where she can play more regularly and continue pushing for a place at the World Cup.”

Wiegman has also recalled Ella Toone, Aggie Beever-Jones and Freya Godfrey to the England squad after injury setbacks ahead of next month’s important World Cup qualifying fixtures. Mead is also included in the 25-player squad.

The Lionesses will take on Spain women’s national football team in Mallorca on 5 June before facing Ukraine women’s national football team at Hill Dickinson Stadium four days later. England currently sit top of their qualifying group after winning all four matches, including an important victory over Spain at Wembley in April, putting them in a strong position to qualify automatically for the 2027 tournament in Brazil.

Wiegman admitted it remains unclear whether Toone is fully ready for a complete 90-minute performance at the highest level but said she is pleased to have the midfielder back available.

“There are players who haven’t had many minutes recently, but I still believe they are among the best options we have to help us win games,” she said. “We also have a strong 25-player squad with plenty of depth.”

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Erica Meg Parkinson has not been included after making a surprise appearance in April’s squad. Wiegman explained that the youngster impressed during camp but still has development ahead before competing regularly for minutes at senior international level.
